Time for a giggle?

Laughing Stress Ball_2I was reading ER stories blog last night when I read this post. In it is a link to a list of medical slang acronyms. This is a HUGE list, so big in fact,  that I haven’t read all of it yet.

But there are some real classics in there, some new ones to me :

  • BSS – Bilateral Samsonite Syndrome: patient admitted with both their bags packed in preparatio

some controversial ones:

  • EMS – Earn Money Sleeping (joke at expense of Emergency Medical Service)

and some truly disgusting and gross ones:

  • go and find them yourself!!!

Be warned though, most  in this list are to be enjoyed and shared in the spirit of black humour. Its what helps keeps us EMS types sane throughout our careers. If you think you may be offended, don’t go and look.

  1. That reminds me of the wonderful BBC news story saying that abbreviations were going out of fashion or something.

A doctor found himself in the witness stand in court, and was asked what the abbreviation “TTFO” stood for.

Rather than saying to the court “I told him to f*** off” he very quickly said “To take fluids orally” and saved his job…

  2. haha i take it youve never read Dr Nick edwards book in stitches he list quite a few in there.

  3. Not an abbreviation, but I floored a nurse the other week by using the diagnosis Ethanol-Induced Gravitational Anomaly in a handover. It took her a second, then she loved it and made me repeat it to the whole team. Twice.

Never seen BSS before, but I have heard the term Positive Samsonite Sign. Same thing.

  4. Is it wrong that I laughed out loud at DRTTTT?
