The BIG Announcement

usa_uk_flag

Well, I’ve been hinting about it enough for the past few weeks/months, I even mentioned it on the EMS Garage Podcast this week. I think it’s well overdue that you all found out about the BIG plan as well.

As you are all aware, Happy Medic and I have developed a bit of a friendship since this blog began. We have had multiple posts linking to each other’s blogs and have wrote considerable numbers of words comparing the way emergency care is delivered in the UK and the USA. As well as blogging, we have been bombarding each other with questions via email, and one day we had the bright idea of actually experiencing for ourselves what the others service is like, and hence “The Project” was born.

So, what is” The Project”, I hear you all say!

Towards the end of this year (October/November), I will be travelling out to Happy Medics corner of the world and “riding out” with him as he goes about his day to day work as a Fire Fighter Paramedic in San Francisco, then as I leave to come back home, he will accompany me back over to the UK to spend some time working alongside me. We spent some time talking about how this was all going to work, and how we would blog about our experiences, when we thought, why not go even further?

The end result to various negotiations is that a BBC film crew will be coming out with me to film the whole experience, including Happy Medic coming back over here!

We hope to experience the good and maybe not so good of each other’s services, and learn from each other the difficulties that are both unique and common to paramedics across “the pond”.

I am really looking forward to experiencing the workings of a Fire based EMS system, along with the perceived difficulties that we all hear about privatised health care. Is it all bad? or are there some good things that may find their way over to the UK? I am also looking forward to showing Happy Medic, how we do things over here.

Socialised healthcare is pretty much top of the agenda in US politics at the moment, certainly for healthcare workers. It’s going to be fascinating to see what HM actually thinks of it, as well as our systems of not having to take all patients to hospital, and our ability to refer on to other health care providers. I am sure that there are going to be many, many things that are incompatible between our two systems, but maybe there will be some that do work and that can improve things even further for all of our emergency patients in both of our countries.

When the trip does happen, I am planning on posting daily, so that you can be well ahead of the crowd, in seeing how we get along.

One thing is for sure, Happy Medic willl be speaking some wonderful Geordie phrases by the end of it – Why Aye Man!!!

It’s going to be one hell of a ride, I can’t wait!!

  1. Wow! I can hardly wait for this to happen. It’s just too bad that Happy’s dept is so far from mine, or I’d have you by for a visit here as well.

Looking forward to the kick-off of “The Project”.

  2. As I told HM, well done! Looking forward to putting a face to the name! I’m very excited to see the outcome of The Project. It’s an amazing testament to the power of the Internet!

  3. I know I will be looking forward to this! THe exchange of ideas and the side by side comparison of the two systems is going to be VERY interesting!

  4. This is truly something to look forward to! Can’t wait to hear the blow-by-blow account, and to see the film.

  5. Good luck, men! Great idea, looking forwards to more.

  6. Will the bbc be making into a show then yeh!?!

You’ll have to makesure not to be wearing that umpa lumpa suit 😛

  7. I’m guessing the only way us Aussies will be able to see the show/s is via YouTube so….
I’m looking forward to watching the episodes on YouTube.

Is the BBC covering all your expenses?, that would be sweet.

  8. Thats awesome. Hopefully by the time you guys do this I should be back home in the UK and hopefully(fingers crossed) a paramedic over there too. Cant wait for it to be on TV.

  9. Good luck youll have to teach him geordie before he gets her or he wont understand the people hes treat man.

    The bairns proper sick man.

  10. Jealous as heck. I live pretty far away from where I think that Happy is, so I’d think that you probably wouldn’t be able to visit me… but if you did, you could see the workings of a hospital-based, a private not-for-profit, and a non-union FD based EMS system. The differences are striking.

That, and we’ve got great steaks here in the US Midwest. Or, “Fly-over country” as folks on the coasts call it.

    Nice job

  11. I am very excited to see the results of your project! It will be very interesting to see the differences in care “across the pond”.

  12. That’s so cool. I went out to the states last year and was a guest of Richmond Ambulance Authority in Virginia. It’s a great experience. I think you’ll be amazed at how similar we are but at the same time different. Confused? Me too. My aim is to go back over there at some point. I’d also like to go out with our brothers in NZ/OZ & SA.

  13. if you ever you need a shotgun… (UK english, not US…)

  14. This is an awsome project, and I think it would make a great TV show.
Cant wait to see it go out. Will you blog while you are out there? Or is it all gonna be kept hush hush?

  15. I’ve worked in the Southwest US with it’s creative slang and in the City we have all manner of odd dialects, I’m just wondering if I can get Mark saying “dude” and “bitchin'” by the end.

  16. Great stuff Mark, I’m really chuffed for you.

I expect it will make some quality TV as well, I’m already looking forward to it.

    Nick.
